Energy and Utility Companies Use Cloud to Increase Productivity

Some major energy companies such as ExxonMobil and Atmos Energy Corporation are already using cloud computing for geo-imagery or consolidation of operations across business units. A write-up in CloudTweaks synthesizes a report issued by the Carbon Disclosure Project in June 2011. According to the article, cloud-enabled energy companies can:

• Reduce energy consumption
• Lower carbon emissions
• Decrease capital expenditures on IT resources

… And that by 2020, these companies are estimated to achieve:

• Annual energy savings of $12.3B
• Annual carbon reductions equivalent to 200M barrels of oil
