Energy and Utility Companies Use Cloud to Increase Productivity
Some major energy companies such as ExxonMobil and Atmos Energy Corporation are already using cloud computing for geo-imagery or consolidation of operations across business units.
A write-up in CloudTweaks synthesizes a report issued by the Carbon Disclosure Project in June 2011. According to the article, cloud-enabled energy companies can:
- Reduce energy consumption
- Lower carbon emissions
- Decrease capital expenditures on IT resources
… And that by 2020, these companies are estimated to achieve:
- Annual energy savings of $12.3B
- Annual carbon reductions equivalent to 200M barrels of oil
Through the new cloud business model and its support tools, companies in the energy industry can definitely improve operational efficiency.
